Tax & Currency Settings

Configure your store's currency and tax settings to ensure accurate pricing and compliance with local regulations. This page helps you set up how prices are displayed and how taxes are calculated during checkout.

Overview

The Tax & Currency settings allow you to:

  • Set your store currency - Choose from 22+ supported currencies
  • Enable tax collection - Automatically calculate and display taxes at checkout
  • Configure tax rates - Set default, regional, and country-specific rates
  • Control tax display - Show tax as included in prices or added at checkout
  • Comply with local regulations - Use appropriate tax labels (VAT, GST, Sales Tax)

Setting Your Store Currency

Your store currency determines how all prices are displayed to customers. This setting affects product prices, order totals, and financial reports.

Supported Currencies

Pixlpay supports 22+ currencies, including:

Currency Selection

Choose the currency most commonly used by your target customers. You cannot change your store currency after receiving orders, so select carefully during initial setup.

Changing Currency

  1. Navigate to Settings → Tax & Currency
  2. Select your desired currency from the dropdown menu
  3. Click Save Currency

All existing product prices will remain in the same numeric value but will be displayed with the new currency symbol.

Existing Orders

Changing your currency does not convert existing order amounts. Historical transactions remain in their original currency for accounting purposes.

Tax Configuration

Enabling Tax Collection

When tax collection is enabled, Pixlpay automatically calculates and displays tax amounts during checkout based on your configured rates.

To enable tax collection:

  1. Navigate to Settings → Tax & Currency
  2. Toggle Enable Tax Collection to ON
  3. Configure your tax settings (see below)
  4. Click Save Tax Settings

Tax Compliance Responsibility

You are responsible for determining the correct tax rates for your business and jurisdiction. Pixlpay provides this tool for convenience but does not provide tax advice. Consult a tax professional for guidance on your specific situation.

Tax Included in Prices

This setting controls whether your product prices already include tax or whether tax is added at checkout.

Tax Included (ON):

  • Product shows $100 → Customer pays $100 (includes $16.67 tax at 20%)
  • Common in: EU, UK, Australia, most of Asia
  • Tax is shown as "included" on invoice

Tax Added at Checkout (OFF):

  • Product shows $100 → Customer pays $120 (adds $20 tax at 20%)
  • Common in: United States, Canada
  • Tax is shown as separate line item

Regional Practices

Follow the standard practice in your primary market:

  • EU/UK stores: Enable "Tax Included in Prices"
  • US/Canada stores: Disable "Tax Included in Prices"

EU Tax Rate

If you sell to multiple European countries, you can set a separate EU tax rate that applies to all EU member states. This rate overrides the default rate for EU customers.

Example:

  • Default Rate: 0% (for non-EU customers)
  • EU Rate: 20% (for all EU countries)
  • Country-Specific: Germany 19%, France 20%, Ireland 23%

Country-specific rates always take priority over the EU rate.

Country-Specific Tax Rates

Set custom tax rates for individual countries. These rates override both the default rate and the EU rate.

Common use cases:

  1. US State Sales Tax

    • California: 7.25%
    • New York: 4.00%
    • Texas: 6.25%
  2. EU VAT Rates

    • Germany: 19%
    • France: 20%
    • Ireland: 23%
    • Luxembourg: 17%
  3. Other Regions

    • Canada: 13% (Ontario HST)
    • Norway: 25% (MVA)
    • Switzerland: 7.7% (MWST)

To add a country-specific rate:

  1. Click Add Country in the Country-Specific Rates section
  2. Select the country from the dropdown
  3. Enter the tax rate percentage
  4. Click Save Tax Settings

Priority Order

Tax rates are applied in this order:

  1. Country-Specific Rate (highest priority)
  2. EU Rate (for EU countries only)
  3. Default Rate (fallback)

Troubleshooting

Tax Not Showing at Checkout

Possible causes:

  1. Tax collection is disabled - Ensure "Enable Tax Collection" toggle is ON
  2. Zero tax rate - Check that you've entered a non-zero default rate or country-specific rate
  3. No rate for customer's country - Ensure default rate is set as fallback

Wrong Tax Amount Calculated

Check these settings:

  1. Tax rate value - Verify the percentage is correct (e.g., 20 for 20%, not 0.20)
  2. Tax included setting - Ensure this matches your pricing strategy
  3. Country-specific rates - Verify the customer's country has the correct rate

Tax Label Not Displaying Correctly

Solutions:

  1. Set manual label - Choose a specific label instead of auto-detect
  2. Clear browser cache - Tax label changes may be cached
  3. Check customer location - Auto-detect uses customer's billing country

Cannot Change Currency

Why currency changes are restricted:

  • Currency cannot be changed after receiving orders
  • This prevents accounting discrepancies and currency conversion issues
  • Contact support if you need to change currency on an active store

Starting Fresh

If you need to change currency and have existing orders, consider:

  1. Creating a new store with the desired currency
  2. Migrating products manually
  3. Keeping the old store for historical orders

EU VAT Compliance Issues

Ensure compliance:

  1. Register for VAT - If selling to EU customers, you may need EU VAT registration
  2. Collect customer VAT numbers - Enable VAT number collection in checkout settings
  3. Apply correct rates - Use official rates from each country's tax authority
  4. Issue valid invoices - Include VAT registration number on invoices

EU VAT Regulations

EU VAT rules are complex. If you're selling digital products to EU customers, you must charge VAT based on the customer's location. Consult a tax professional for EU VAT compliance.

  • Store Settings - Configure other store-wide settings
  • Payments - Set up payment gateways (currency must match gateway support)
  • Products - Set product prices in your store currency
  • Localized Pricing - Offer region-specific pricing
  • Orders - View tax calculations on completed orders
  • Financials - Track tax collected in financial reports

Best Practices

  1. Set currency early - Choose your currency before adding products or receiving orders
  2. Consult professionals - Work with an accountant or tax advisor for rate configuration
  3. Review regularly - Tax rates change; review your settings quarterly
  4. Test checkout - Place test orders to verify tax calculations are correct
  5. Document changes - Keep records of when you change tax rates for accounting purposes
  6. Regional compliance - Follow tax collection and remittance rules in your jurisdiction
  7. Update invoices - Ensure your invoice templates show tax correctly (included vs. added)
